Bronx Beautiful is one of the liberal arts capstone courses at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College and is limited to 20 students who have completed 42 credits or more. Capstone students have come a long way! This section of CAP 200 includes a service learning component, competencies designed to prepare students for additional schooling and/or their career, and emphasizes gathering, interpreting, and using data. This liberal arts capstone course engages students in an in-depth study of the Bronx and challenges them to question and re-evaluate their perceptions of the borough. Studying the Bronx from various disciplinary perspectives enables them to demonstrate and exercise their mastery of general education skills including but not limited to Critical Thinking, Written and Oral Communication, Information and Technology Literacy and Global and Diversity Awareness.

This course focuses on survey of speech, language, and communication disorders for educators. It includes the consideration of varied disorders that might be encountered in educational settings; application to children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

This course is an overview of speech, language, and hearing disorders. It will investigate the impact of communication on children with developmental disabilities and enable non-specialists to work effectively with this population. Throughout this course, we will consider a range of problems (i.e., neurological and physiological disabilities), as well as applications to children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

This introductory graduate level three-credit course is taken in the first semester of the interdisciplinary, collaborative Advanced Certificate Program in Autism Spectrum Disorders. The course also serves as an elective in the Master’s Program in Speech-Language Pathology. Contemporary issues in autism spectrum disorders across the lifespan are addressed from an interdisciplinary, inter-professional cross-paradigm perspective. Key units include historical perspectives on autism, theoretical models, core characteristics and co-morbid features, lifespan issues including the concerns of families from diverse backgrounds, and ASD culture and identity from a strengths-based perspective. Study of applied research with children in social science settings. Discussion of ethical issues that arise when conducting research with children. Students will develop their own research questions and explore appropriate methodologies for examining them. Different approaches to research, both quantitative/experimental and qualitative will be discussed. Students will gain hands-on experience with one or more research methods inside and/or outside of the class. The course emphasizes critical reading and understanding of the research literature and the presentation of research findings.

This is the syllabus for a Health Care Coordination course.
The goal of health care coordination is to improve patient outcomes with better health care services. Care coordinators play a critical role in improving patient care. Students will learn how to effectively advocate for patients and interact with members of the healthcare team in finding solutions to provide high quality, value-based, and efficient care. Effective communication styles, assessing patient’s needs and goals, and helping with patients’ transitions of care are among many topics covered in this course. Upon course completion, students will have acquired basic knowledge and skills to educate, engage, and support patients and their health care teams to improve health outcomes and quality of life.

This is the first of two lessons/labs for teaching and learning of computer science and sociology. Either and be used on their own or they can be used in sequence, in which case this should be used first.
Students will develop CS skills and behaviors including but not limited to: learning what an API is, learning how to access and utilize data on an API, and developing their R coding skills and knowledge. Students will also learn basic, but important, sociological principles such as how poverty is related to educational opportunities in America. Although prior knowledge of CS and sociology is helpful, neither is necessary for student (or instructor) success on this two-week project. Three instructional hours per week (total of six hours over two weeks).
