Bronx Beautiful is one of the liberal arts capstone courses at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College and is limited to 20 students who have completed 42 credits or more. Capstone students have come a long way! This section of CAP 200 includes a service learning component, competencies designed to prepare students for additional schooling and/or their career, and emphasizes gathering, interpreting, and using data. This liberal arts capstone course engages students in an in-depth study of the Bronx and challenges them to question and re-evaluate their perceptions of the borough. Studying the Bronx from various disciplinary perspectives enables them to demonstrate and exercise their mastery of general education skills including but not limited to Critical Thinking, Written and Oral Communication, Information and Technology Literacy and Global and Diversity Awareness.

This introductory graduate level three-credit course is taken in the first semester of the interdisciplinary, collaborative Advanced Certificate Program in Autism Spectrum Disorders. The course also serves as an elective in the Master’s Program in Speech-Language Pathology. Contemporary issues in autism spectrum disorders across the lifespan are addressed from an interdisciplinary, inter-professional cross-paradigm perspective. Key units include historical perspectives on autism, theoretical models, core characteristics and co-morbid features, lifespan issues including the concerns of families from diverse backgrounds, and ASD culture and identity from a strengths-based perspective. This is the first of two lessons/labs for teaching and learning of computer science and sociology. Either and be used on their own or they can be used in sequence, in which case this should be used first. Students will develop CS skills and behaviors including but not limited to: learning what an API is, learning how to access and utilize data on an API, and developing their R coding skills and knowledge. Students will also learn basic, but important, sociological principles such as how poverty is related to educational opportunities in America. Although prior knowledge of CS and sociology is helpful, neither is necessary for student (or instructor) success on this two-week project. Three instructional hours per week (total of six hours over two weeks).
