This course is one in a sequence of four education courses deigned for teachers specializing in mathematics in grades K-6. The first two courses (CBSE 7400T and CBSE 7401T) focus on research-based methodology for teaching mathematics and its use in the classroom. CBSE 7401T deals mainly with methodology for teaching topics related to rational numbers, decimals and percents measurement and geometry.

Study of applied research with children in social science settings. Discussion of ethical issues that arise when conducting research with children. Students will develop their own research questions and explore appropriate methodologies for examining them. Different approaches to research, both quantitative/experimental and qualitative will be discussed. Students will gain hands-on experience with one or more research methods inside and/or outside of the class. The course emphasizes critical reading and understanding of the research literature and the presentation of research findings.

Capstone course is to expose students to the broad range of professions and “real world” opportunities in practice, policy, and advocacy focusing on children and to examine, in-depth, the theory and research underpinning the perspectives on children reflected in these different contexts. In so doing, the course aims to make a critical link between the academic skills and knowledge students acquire as part of the major in Children and Youth Studies, and its application in the many professional areas, government agencies, and non-government organizations whose primary orientation is children and young people.

A study of what "culture" is; how we see it based on several factors, how it influences the choices and decision we make; how to deal positively with conflicts that inevitably arise in working /living situations with people of diverse cultures. This is a course structured to raise multicultural awareness and fortify students' social skills in dealing with cultural differences. It includes ethnographic study of cultural groups in the U.S.A and responses to shared values, observations or experiences based on student's ancestry, heritage, travels. Students will learn about culture "do and donts" around the world and provide the class with their own culture shock experience and how they overcame them. Through the study of cultural concepts, this course develops skills in critical thinking, writing and scholarly documentation.

This may include understanding and appreciating problems in large-scale software development such as functional analysis of information processing systems, system design concepts, timing estimates, documentation, and system testing.

Two of the core competencies designated for The First Year Seminar Liberal Arts Math and Science (LMF 101) course are Integrative Learning and Global Learning along with oral communication. These abilities are exercised by students in the Career/Interview Presentation project. The main goal of the assignment is to promote student networking within the scientific community through interviews with an expert in the field. Also the FYS students will conduct background research about their career choices and use their findings to determine if they can be realized when interviewing a professional. The assignment is scaffolded whereby students will learn to use on-line resources to search for information about the profession and use on-line tools to material in preparation for the interview. Students will learn how to write professional emails, network and create PowerPoint slides. After the class presentation, students are asked to write a reflection in their ePortfolio on their career choice and interview experiences. The time dedicated for this project is on the order of weeks and counts for 20% (15% oral presentation and 5 % reflection) of the final grade.
