As organisms, humans need to eat to live. As cultural beings, eating and food provide some of the most basic ways in which humans define themselves. One group’s delicacies are another’s taboos, and what defines comfort foods and favorite dishes shifts drastically across cultures and individuals. Eating and food are simultaneously profoundly personal, deeply cultural, inherently economic, and increasingly political. This course is organized around the production, circulation, and consumption of food, and the political and economic effects of those processes. Students will learn to use food as an analytical entry point for thinking about relationships among humans and with non-human beings.

This seminar aims to channel the excitement and interest generated by the film Black Panther into a course that utilizes its themes, design elements, and costumes as a means to explore the art and culture of the African continent. This course will provide students with the tools to assess how African cultures are referenced and reimagined in the film, ultimately allowing them to assess if these allusions are informed and appropriate and how they shape our understanding of the film. The course begins by providing students with several theoretical frameworks for understanding the film and its use of African cultures, followed by an exploration of ancient and historical African empires that served as the inspiration for the mythological empire of Wakanda. The majority of the class focuses on specific characters, examining the actual culture practices and forms of dress that influenced their characterization, providing students with a more nuanced and informed understanding of African cultural practices. Students will examine a diverse range of visual art forms throughout the African continent, with an emphasis on textiles, dress and adornment. Most importantly, this course will encourage students to interrogate and question how African cultures are frequently referenced in American popular culture.

Project-based course on the design of mechatronic devices to address needs identified by hospital-based clinicians and industry. Students work in teams to develop a mechatronic prototype. The lectures will cover the design of medical devices and robotics including sensors, actuators, and robots. The students will communicate with customers to understand design needs, then conduct study on prior art, intellectual property, due diligence, and idea conceptualization. Students will present ideas in class and to a broad audience from local industry. Students will also write a publication-quality final report, which they will be encouraged for publication submission.

This course is an introduction to modern telephone networks and interfaces. Telephone sets, the central office and the Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) are discussed in detail. Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) and public switches, both digital and analog, are discussed, with emphasis on features, signaling and technology. Concludes with the transmission of audio signals through different networks. Laboratory experiments supplement the course and expose students to the fundamentals of telephony.

The Documentary Production class is devoted to the development and production of short 5-10 minute documentaries.

The course promotes the idea of learning production skills through direct practice. Students in the class will be required to demonstrate an understanding of documentary research and development, camera techniques, location sound for documentary, as well as editing both picture and sound.

Students will consider important questions when developing their ideas for a documentary topic.

Course Goals:

Documentary Production will instill in film and television students an understanding and respect for the documentary format and medium.
Documentary Production will encourage students to explore various aesthetic options when shaping a documentary topic.
Students will learn the fundamental technical skills required to thoroughly research and develop a short documentary topic.
Students will learn the fundamentals of camera, sound, and editing considerations necessary for completing a short documentary.
Students will gain an appreciation of the role documentary can play in purposeful forms of filmmaking, with an emphasis on community engagement and community outreach.

During the months ahead, you will develop a screenplay suitable for production in Film 3300W Thesis Film Production. To help accomplish this, you will be discussing various aspects of screenwriting and filmmaking, doing appropriate reading, screening films, completing exercises meant to develop your ideas and, most importantly, writing a five-to-ten page screenplay.

All assignments must be typed. Spelling and grammar count. Assignments are due at the beginning of each class.

This course explores creative visual thinking and its importance to communication design. Students experiment with image-making techniques and learn to use graphic elements to communicate concepts and ideas. The course will emphasize the integration of communication concepts, type and graphics and its relationship to multiple disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design production, and others. Students develop projects from thumbnails through final presentations.

Introduces a variety of basic layouts and formats are introduced, building technical and practical fluency in setting and working with type for both print and screen. This course further explores topics learned in COMD1167 Type and Media, such as the typeface selection, and the use of the typographical grids. Problem-solving for most common typographical problems is discussed.

In this course, students learn to refine their conceptual thinking, and the ability to apply design concepts across various media channels. This course challenges students to think and strategically apply campaign ideas. At this stage, students choose a media placement and incorporate it into the solution.

Project based assignments from concept through final digital output are an integral part of the course.

The course also introduces the collaborative relationship between Art Director and Copywriter. Student teams brainstorm, develop copy, art direct and pitch ideas in teams. Students will explore the dialogue between products and services and how to communicate their benefits and features to the intended target.

An in-depth introduction to communication design theory, this course examines theoretical perspectives of design practice within the larger discourse of design and visual culture.

Communication models, the nature of representation, the dimensions of context, and semiotics are explored through critical readings in key documents from the early decades of the twentieth century to the present.

COMD 3701 Design Studio: Working independently, each student researches, conceptualizes, and develops an in-depth project, across media channels, which uses design-thinking to address a contemporary issue.

By paying particular attention to the intersection of films, literature and cities, this course explores the construction of urban spaces and how they are depicted in film and literature. Through an array of primary and secondary sources, students will be exposed to the dark city and film noir, the city of love (Paris), the city in ruins and the divided city (Berlin, Belfast, Beirut), utopias and dystopias (fantastic and virtual cities), ghettos and barrios, the city as queer playground, the global city and cities in globalization. By comparing myriad writings and films about city life and culture, students will also explore the ways in which urban spaces reflect the social realities of race, class, age, gender, and ethnicity and how power relations are organized by these social differences which, in turn, produce urban patterns and processes.

With New York City as a world food culture laboratory, students will explore the concept of culinary tourism and its economic impact on the tourism industry. Students will create, market and conduct their own NYC culinary walking tour.
