Arts in New York City introduces students to a range of artistic forms, venues, media, and movements in the arts mecca that is New York City. Students will be exposed to visual and performance arts as well as public, private, and community-based arts institutions.

This course will explore art since 1980 and consider the questions and ideas embedded in contemporary art in relation to prior historical movements. We will consider a range of questions, including approaches on how to write about contemporary art, when and where to apply philosophical theories, and what a social historical context for a body of work might be, as well as who, how, and why some artists make it into the art history books and others don‰Ûªt. There will be weekly presentations of texts in class and writing assignments that will encourage students to present their opinions on current exhibitions in relation to examples of the literature discussed in class.

The Syllabus for Bio. 013, Writing in the Sciences - Evolutionary Themes, is a College Writing 2 course that develops student skill in science writing for different audiences: Scientists writing for themselves (the Field journal); Scientists writing for other scientists (the Review article); and Scientists writing for students/ society ( an Essay for a periodical that utilizes analogy/metaphor). To inform this writing, students read and discuss Darwin's original works and the writings of more contemporary evolutionary theorists, including E. Mayr and S.J. Gould. This course is appropriate for incoming students as well as more advanced biology students.

Course Description: This course examines the foundations, ideas, concerns, and implications of Black feminism within the context of the Black Atlantic. A major goal of this class is to foster dialogue and critical discussion about Black feminism as a site of theory and practice emphasizing social, political, and personal transformation.

The objective of the course is to examine current practices in the apparel industry in the areas listed below, divided into three modules of instruction. The course culminates in a final module during which students will develop their original ideas based on research in these areas:

Module 1: Fair Trade and Ethics Global practices in the industry
Module 2: Sustainability and Sustainable Alternatives Biosynthetic materials being developed in conjunction with efforts to thwart climate change
Module 3: Technology in Fashion Smart textiles that redefine functionality of garments
Module 4: Design, Market and Pitch a product or collection grounded in one of these emerging areas of the fashion industry

This course is geared to increase the knowledge and awareness of prospective teachers about concepts and programs of bilingualism in the U.S. We will explore the history of bilingual education in the United States, policies, theories and practices. In addition, we will explore viewpoints on literacy for bilinguals or emergent bilinguals. We will also explore bilingual programs and the controversies and ideologies about bilingualism in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

This course is an introduction to the moral challenges that arise in the design and execution of biomedical research and the development of medical interventions. A historical review segues into detailed examination of key ethical concepts and principles, as well as topics of particular concern. At the culmination of the semester, students apply their knowledge of research ethics to an ethical analysis of their MTM BioDesign projects.

By the end of this course, students will have: Engaged in analytic reading, writing and critical thinking about novels written by black women Participated in and created a learning community via asynchronous and synchronous online discussions Learned the ways that culture, history and environment shape literature and interpretation Utilized learned tools of analysis through practice

This course will explore three modules of learning.
Anatomy and Psycho-Physical Centering, will explore two foundations: (1) the start of our research and practical application of the human anatomy in regards to how our body moves; and (2) your ability to tune into movement centers within the body by utilizing Chakra as a guiding study. Please note: Anatomy will be a continuous study throughout the entire semester.
THE SECOND MODULE, Partnered Connection, will focus on partnering with lifts, counter-balances, falls, and rolls that will build to a partnering sequence of the tools presented.
THE LAST MODULE, Global Archetypes, will explore archetypal dynamics in movement and how that connects to others, physical impulses, and given circumstances. This coursework aims to refine and expand proficiency in physical skills and the ability to embody and perform in an authentic, expressive, and unedited manner.
● Application of the learned movement techniques will be assessed in various homework exercises, daily ensemble participation, quizzes, and three in-class performances.

Visual communication pervades our lives. We live in a visual culture, surrounded by visual messages that affect us consciously and unconsciously. Much of our media and electronic communications are visually-oriented. But the truth is that as humans, we have always lived that way, and we are, in fact, programmed to take in the world through our visual perceptions. This class will grapple with the question of what it means to be so dependent on visual input and output and how that affects all aspects of our lives as one of our dominant communicative tools. And you may even learn how you can take advantage of this tool – and lessen it’s negative impact. Historical, physiological, perceptual and cognitive aspects of visual communication. Broad and diverse approaches to visual perception, reception and persuasion including theoretical perspectives, critical analysis methods, and ethical implications.
