Development is mutual and interactional. As we develop, we internalize significant voices while integrating rituals, language, values and beliefs from the environment. We will discuss whether development is nurture-based or nature-based using various developmental theories. Topics include genetic considerations; prenatal development; the characteristics of the neonate; cognitive processes; language development; personality changes; early socialization; moral development.

This assignment aims at making instruction student-centered where students would participate in the curation of content. Students are asked to explain the various economic topics using the economic terminology and personal experience. For example, in this assignment, the students are split in groups and asked to discuss and identify what their opportunity cost of getting a college degree is. They will discuss all the items that comprise the opportunity cost and the benefits of going to college and share this in real time with everyone else through a google document.
Assignment Learning Outcomes: Define and apply the notion of opportunity cost. Understand the consequences of making choices and the relation with costs. Apply and clarify choices based on benefit and cost analysis.

Using findings from prior conducted research and group discussions, students will present some economic indicators and the performance of the economy of a country of their choice (students self-selects the country to be researched). For example, the student is asked to identify the latest recession experienced by the selected country using the historical real GDP data collected and analyzed in stage two. Having identified the time of the recession, the student is asked to explain what happened to the other economic indicators, such as inflation rate and unemployment rate during that specific time.

This course introduces students to the role of human service professionals working in an urban environment. Students will learn about the historical context that led to the development of the various human service professions, with an emphasis on New York City. Other topics to be discussed include the value, knowledge, and skill base of the helping process, culturally competent work, and issues of social justice. Emphasis will be place on the relationships between social welfare policy, human need, and the provision of human services.

This course examines the impact and implications of today’s dynamic international context for nations and their citizens. To operate in this global context, citizens, corporations, and governments must know other cultures and political-economic systems and how global forces influence domestic activities, both public and private. Analyzing the social, cultural, economic, and current political characteristics of the international environment, students will learn how these characteristics may affect their lives and choices.
This course serves as an introduction to the interdisciplinary studies of global issues and to CSI’s International Studies program. Its curriculum draws on literary, cultural, and social scientific and historical approaches to international concerns, events, and problems. The purpose of this course is to equip students with the tools and information needed to better understand globalization through political, economic, environmental and cultural issues in today’s world.

This course aims to familiarize students with Puerto Rican and Latino Studies by providing an interdisciplinary survey of the field’s theoretical foundations. The course overviews the important historical, political and economic context that has created and influenced the Puerto Rican and Latinx diaspora in the United States. It explores central themes within the discipline, including immigration, identity, gender and sexuality, education, activism, poetry, and literature. The course analyzes the influence of Puerto Rican and Latinx communities on urban centers, popular culture and politics.

W Mills called a “sociological imagination” that will allow them to see how individuals are shaped by social structures and institutions, and in turn how we as individuals recreate those institutions. We will discuss theoretical and methodological approaches, becoming aware of how sociologists make sense of this complex social world.

W Mills called a “sociological imagination” that will allow them to see how individuals are shaped by social structures and institutions, and in turn recreate those institutions. Using the topic of suicide, students explore the difference between sociological and non-sociological explanations of human behavior. After forming a research question, they gather and analyze evidence to test their question.

This Group Research Project is designed to give students practice with connecting course topics with real world events. Students join assigned groups, to choose a topic that they wish to investigate that relates to the course content. This assignment is designed to be administers over the course of the semester. The assignment givess students practice with working in teams as they work together to conduct research, that culminates in a Final Presentation, at the end of the course.
