Course Description: This course examines the foundations, ideas, concerns, and implications of Black feminism within the context of the Black Atlantic. A major goal of this class is to foster dialogue and critical discussion about Black feminism as a site of theory and practice emphasizing social, political, and personal transformation.

The objective of the course is to examine current practices in the apparel industry in the areas listed below, divided into three modules of instruction. The course culminates in a final module during which students will develop their original ideas based on research in these areas:

Module 1: Fair Trade and Ethics Global practices in the industry
Module 2: Sustainability and Sustainable Alternatives Biosynthetic materials being developed in conjunction with efforts to thwart climate change
Module 3: Technology in Fashion Smart textiles that redefine functionality of garments
Module 4: Design, Market and Pitch a product or collection grounded in one of these emerging areas of the fashion industry

This course is designed to provide students with knowledge and understanding of behavioral assessment and intervention strategies. Students will learn and review the fundamental principles that govern behavior according to behavioral and learning theorists. Students will then apply these principles of behavior to the classroom for assessment, intervention, and evaluation purposes. This course prepares students to use collaborative problem solving in the application of behavioral techniques.

This course is geared to increase the knowledge and awareness of prospective teachers about concepts and programs of bilingualism in the U.S. We will explore the history of bilingual education in the United States, policies, theories and practices. In addition, we will explore viewpoints on literacy for bilinguals or emergent bilinguals. We will also explore bilingual programs and the controversies and ideologies about bilingualism in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

This is an introductory statistics class focused on the concepts of biological data analyses and on how statistics can help extract scientific insight from data. With the use of real examples from biology and medicine we will learn what statistic methods to use in each case and why. During the course, we will demonstrate how to carry out the calculations for the methods learned and how to implement these methods in the computer program R.

This course is a continuation of Bioinformatics I. Topics include gene expression, microarrays, next- generation sequencing methods, RNA-seq, large genomic projects, protein structure and stability, protein folding, and computational structure prediction of proteins; proteomics; and protein-nucleic acid interactions. The lab component includes R-based statistical data analysis on large datasets, introduction to big data analysis tools, protein visualization software, internet-based tools and high-level programming languages.

This course is an introduction to the moral challenges that arise in the design and execution of biomedical research and the development of medical interventions. A historical review segues into detailed examination of key ethical concepts and principles, as well as topics of particular concern. At the culmination of the semester, students apply their knowledge of research ethics to an ethical analysis of their MTM BioDesign projects.

A seminar-based course that exposes students to current research topics in the fields of Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. Weekly presentations by invited speakers and/or faculty introduce students to the broad diversity of research areas in both fields, and engages them in critical thinking and writing. Online lectures and reading activities will be given periodically.
