Drug and Disease Research Paper [Veterinary Technology]
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC
Rating
0.0 stars

This Drug and Disease assignment has been prepared for the capstone course Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (SCV 262). Students take the course in the last semester of the 2-year AAS degree in Veterinary Technology at LaGuardia Community College. Students completing this assignment are second year (junior), clinical phase students. In this course, students are introduced to concepts in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, providing a basis for an applied, systems-based introduction to veterinary drugs. The course also introduces concepts in pharmacy management and toxicology. As a capstone course, this course assignment provides a basis for students to apply veterinary medical knowledge and practice communicating this application in both written and oral formats. The assignment typically takes students several weeks to complete and is worth 20% of the final grade.
The Drug and Disease assignment asks students to choose a veterinary drug (from an instructor-created list) and connect this drug with an associated veterinary disease that can be treated with it. Students are encouraged to use research, experience from prior veterinary technology coursework (Introduction to Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Pathophysiology, Veterinary Nursing, Veterinary Laboratory Techniques and Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology) along with clinical experience to support this investigation.
Students are first asked to demonstrate their ability to make logical (medically-sound), technician-level connections and conclusions about the drug and disease by writing a research paper. They then are asked to participate in a mock-client discharge/interview about the drug and disease that they have researched.

First aid is the provision of immediate care to a victim with an injury of illness, usually effected by a lay person, and performed within a limited skill range. First aid is normally performed until the injury or illness is satisfactorily dealt with (such as in the case of small cuts, minor bruises, and blisters) or until the next level of care, such as an ambulance or doctor, arrives. This book is a Canadian version of the original at Wikibooks. All references to protocols which do not comply with resuscitation standards in Canada have been removed.

Home health services are those which are provided within the comforts of the home setting to help people avoid hospitalization or skilled nursing facility placement, while they recover from illness, injury, or disability. Home health care may also be provided to people who suffer from chronic illnesses, those who have cognitive or physical disabilities or those who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. This text provides the background necessary to begin working toward a career in the home care field as either a Home Health Aide or Personal Care Aide, which are two of the fastest growing occupations. This text is also suitable for those who are providing care to loved ones and who would like additional information to best provide that care, or for use within Home Health Aide and Personal Care Aide programs.

Consisting of 12 chapters, this text takes you from gaining an understanding of what home care is and the tasks involved, through better understanding the physical and psychological needs of people, along with the influence of culture on behaviors, values, and healthcare practices. This text provides an in-depth exploration of the physical and psychological changes which occur throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on understanding the unique needs of children, the elderly, and those with mental health issues, and developmental and physical disabilities. Chapters dedicated to the basics of nutrition, budgeting, and first aid provision are included. Specific methods for providing personal and homecare, along with videos to demonstrate tasks complete this text.

This course reviews the key genomic technologies and computational approaches that are driving advances in prognostics, diagnostics, and treatment. Throughout the semester, emphasis will return to issues surrounding the context of genomics in medicine including: what does a physician need to know? what sorts of questions will s/he likely encounter from patients? how should s/he respond? Lecturers will guide the student through real world patient-doctor interactions. Outcome considerations and socioeconomic implications of personalized medicine are also discussed. The first part of the course introduces key basic concepts of molecular biology, computational biology, and genomics. Continuing in the informatics applications portion of the course, lecturers begin each lecture block with a scenario, in order to set the stage and engage the student by showing: why is this important to know? how will the information presented be brought to bear on medical practice? The final section presents the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genomic medicine. A vision of how genomic medicine relates to preventative care and public health is presented in a discussion forum with the students where the following questions are explored: what is your level of preparedness now? what challenges must be met by the healthcare industry to get to where it needs to be?
