Essential Physiology

Human Anatomy and Physiology is designed for the two-semester anatomy and physiology course taken by life science and allied health students. The textbook follows the scope and sequence of most Human Anatomy and Physiology courses, and its coverage and organization were informed by hundreds of instructors who teach the course. Instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. The artwork for this textbook is aimed focusing student learning through a powerful blend of traditional depictions and instructional innovations. Color is used sparingly, to emphasize the most important aspects of any given illustration. Significant use of micrographs from the University of Michigan complement the illustrations, and provide the students with a meaningful alternate depiction of each concept. Finally, enrichment elements provide relevance and deeper context for students, particularly in the areas of health, disease, and information relevant to their intended careers.

Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering I

From its beginnings in the late nineteenth century, electrical engineering has blossomed from focusing on electrical circuits for power, telegraphy and telephony to focusing on a much broader range of disciplines. However, the underlying themes are relevant today: Power creation and transmission and information have been the underlying themes of electrical engineering for a century and a half. This course concentrates on the latter theme: the representation, manipulation, transmission, and reception of information by electrical means. This course describes what information is, how engineers quantify information, and how electrical signals represent information.

Images of Memorable Cases: 50 Years at the Bedside

When sophisticated medical technology became available in the 1970s, it established diagnoses with unprecedented speed and accuracy. But it also affected the practice and teaching of medicine, shifting focus from the bedside to the laboratory and giving rise to a laboratory-oriented rather than a patient-oriented mindset. As a result, physicians’ bedside skills have steadily deteriorated, and using one’s mind and sensory faculties to make diagnoses has become a lost art.
