Today GPS is critical to positioning, navigation, and timing. The smooth functioning of financial transactions, air traffic, ATMs, cell phones and modern life in general around the world depend on GPS. This very criticality requires continuous modernization. The oldest satellites in the current constellation were launched in the 1990s. If you imagine using a computer of that vintage today, it is not surprising that the system is being substantially updated. Global Positioning System (GPS) is now a part of a growing international con?text-the Global Navigation Satellite System, GNSS. This course dives into how GPS and other GNSS systems are designed, how they operate, and the impacts they have on spatial analysis and spatially-enabled systems.

In-class activity for small groups of 3-4 students; intended to review the musical characteristics associated with four genres of sacred music: plainchant; organum; Renaissance mass; chorale. In the first phase, groups are asked to fill out a table with the musical characteristics of each genre while looking over their notes and textbook. In the second phase, groups are given online access to four anonymous musical examples (one for each genre). While listening and discussing at their own pace, groups should identify the genre for each example and give two reasons behind their choice. The format of this activity can be easily repurposed to fit other musical genres, periods, or styles.

Examines the intellectual foundations of the new discipline of deep sea archaeology, a convergence of oceanography, archaeology, and engineering. How best are robots and submarines employed for archaeological work? How do new technologies change operations plans, research designs, and archaeological questions? Covers oceanography, history and technology of underwater vehicles, search strategies, technology development, archaeological technique, sociology of scientific knowledge. Case studies of deep-sea projects include the wrecks of the Titanic and Monitor, Roman trading vessels in the Mediterranean, and deep research in the Black Sea.

15-week long course (Fall) taught online synchronously. The course is a survey of Western art music for non-music majors and incorporates a significant amount of group work throughout the semester. It uses an OER textbook, Resonances by Esther Morgan-Ellis, and is a Zero Textbook Cost course.
