This textbook began with the work of Karl Hagen, who published it under a Creative Commons license as “Navigating English Grammar” at his site Polysyllabic. As part of a project which started in Fall 2020, and is continuing as of Fall 2022, the textbook is intended to be read, annotated, and updated by ENG 270 courses at York College / CUNY, becoming a resource for future students, and ultimately becoming a textbook to be used by other students of the syntax of varieties of English.
This is a self-contained, open educational resource (OER) textbook for college algebra. Students can use the book to learn concepts and work in the book themselves. Instructors can adapt the book for use in any college algebra course to facilitate active learning through problem solving. This workbook is mainly based on the author‰Ûªs worksheets for the college algebra course (MAD-119) at QCC of CUNY. It is intended as a concise introduction to college algebra at the intermediate level.
It contains 25 lessons. Each lesson, corresponding to roughly one class meeting, starts with a page on concepts, formulas and examples, and ends with a list of practice problems that students are expected to be able to solve and complete in class.
This is the second edition of the book "A Concise Workbook for College Algebra". In this new edition, some tips and notes, more exercises and examples were added.
I‰Ûªve been teaching critical thinking for many years, and I‰Ûªve developed a short, free, Creative Commons-licensed text that‰Ûªs useful for a brief (maybe 3 week?) critical thinking section in any intro philosophy or composition course (or really, just about any course; it‰Ûªs been used at my college by professors from a number of departments.)
CLDV100 (Liberal Arts) Introduction to Multicultural Studies in the 21st Century: 3 hrs. 3 crs.
A study of what culture is; how it influences the choices we make; how to deal positively with conflicts that inevitably arise in working/living situations with people of diverse cultures. It is a course structured to raise multicultural awareness and fortify students' social skills in dealing with cultural differences. It includes an ethnographic study of cultural groups in the U.S.A. Through the study of cultural concepts, this course develops skills in critical thinking, writing, and scholarly documentation. Not open to students with credit in CLDV 101 or Core 101. Prereq: ENG 125. Coreq: ENG 125. This is a Writing Intensive course. [Flexible Core: Individual and Society].
This book intends to provide both the fundamentals of Electromagnetics but also some practical applications of the concepts covered. Having taught electromagnetics for several years, the authors feel that many times the field of electromagnetics comes as “old” and often times students do not appreciate the concepts and their importance in everyday applications. The authors intend to accompany the EM concepts with life applications. Hence, students may see the direct impact of the knowledge they acquire through the study of the field of electromagnetics and better appreciate the field.
This text is intended for a brief introductory course in plane geometry. It covers the topics from elementary geometry that are most likely to be required for more advanced mathematics courses. The only prerequisite is a semester of algebra.
The emphasis is on applying basic geometric principles to the numerical solution of problems. For this purpose the number of theorems and definitions is kept small. Proofs are short and intuitive, mostly in the style of those found in a typical trigonometry or precalculus text. There is little attempt to teach theorem-proving or formal methods of reasoning. However the topics are ordered so that they may be taught deductively.
The problems are arranged in pairs so that just the odd-numbered or just the even-numbered can be assigned. For assistance, the student may refer to a large number of completely worked-out examples. Most problems are presented in diagram form so that the difficulty of translating words into pictures is avoided. Many problems require the solution of algebraic equations in a geometric context. These are included to reinforce the student's algebraic and numerical skills, A few of the exercises involve the application of geometry to simple practical problems. These serve primarily to convince the student that what he or she is studying is useful. Historical notes are added where appropriate to give the student a greater appreciation of the subject.
This book is suitable for a course of about 45 semester hours. A shorter course may be devised by skipping proofs, avoiding the more complicated problems and omitting less crucial topics.
